Speaker Bio: Paul Nestadt, MD is the James Wah Professor of Psychiatry at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and the Medical Director of the Center for Suicide Prevention in the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. As a clinician, Dr. Nestadt attends on the inpatient dual diagnosis unit at Hopkins, directs the Anxiety Disorders consultation clinic, and helped found the esketamine clinic at Hopkins. His research into suicide prevention centers the roles of firearms, opioids, and large scale data analysis as well as qualitative interviews with grieving families.  Dr. Nestadt is the chair of Maryland’s Suicide Fatality Review Committee and has written dozens of chapters for leading psychiatric and medical textbooks, ~ 100 peer-reviewed papers, and has spoken nationally and internationally on the topics of suicide risk and the role of firearms, opiates, and the limitations of screening.

Learning Objectives:

1.       Describe the epidemiology of suicide in the United States, with emphasis on demographic and geographic patterns related to firearm use.

2.       Explain why access to firearms increases the lethality of suicide attempts and contributes to disparities in suicide mortality.

3.       Identify the key factors that influence method choice in suicidal behavior, including the role of impulsivity and access to lethal means.

Description: Dr. Paul Nestadt, a psychiatrist and suicide prevention researcher at Johns Hopkins, will present a data-driven talk on the critical role of firearm access in suicide. He’ll explore why firearms account for over half of all suicide deaths in the U.S., how their lethality drives disparities by sex, age, and geography, and what policies and clinical interventions—like safe storage practices and Extreme Risk Protection Orders (ERPOs)—have been shown to save lives. The presentation will highlight real-world examples and emphasize opportunities for action at the local level, especially relevant to suicide prevention efforts in Missouri.

Target Audience: Social Workers, Counselors, and/or other Mental Health Professionals
