Speaker Bio: Dr. Grady brings over 25 years of expertise to the helping profession, marked by a rich background that includes 12 years in child welfare and diverse roles in psychiatric emergency rooms, inpatient and outpatient units at psychiatric hospitals, grief support centers, and wellness clinics. As the owner of a private practice in Prairie Village, she extends her influence nationally, addressing audiences in education, first responders, and school districts, with a particular focus on youth suicide.
In the counseling room, Dr. Grady excels in guiding individuals, families, and couples through challenges related to anxiety, depression, and relationship struggles. Dr. Grady specializes in a holistic approach that goes beyond addressing the surface symptoms of mental illness. She delves into the core issues that underlie these challenges, aiming to identify and address the root causes. This approach recognizes the interconnectedness of mental, emotional, spiritual, and physical well-being, emphasizing the importance of the mind-body connection.
Learning Objectives:
1. Examine 10,000 pediatric suicides to determine factors, causes, and warning signs
2. Identify red flags in suicidal youth
3. Explore practical strategies for building a protective connection with suicidal youth
Description: Suicide ranks as one of the top three causes of death for school-aged people in the United States. Despite the various suicide prevention initiatives, the number of youth who die by suicide continues to rise. Notable differences exist between those who merely attempt suicide and those who complete it. This presentation will utilize post-mortem analysis to take a brief look at approximately 10,000 youth suicides. Statistics will show listeners the various precipitating circumstances that are more likely to lead to suicide, as well as red flags in suicidal youth. Additionally, this presentation will explore ways clinicians may better treat suicidal youth by increasing connectedness.
Target Audience: Social Workers, Counselors, and/or other Mental Health Professionals
