Speaker Bio: Dr. Grady brings over 25 years of expertise to the helping profession, marked by a rich background that includes 12 years in child welfare and diverse roles in psychiatric emergency rooms, inpatient and outpatient units at psychiatric hospitals, grief support centers, and wellness clinics. As the owner of a private practice in Prairie Village, she extends her influence nationally, addressing audiences in education, first responders, and school districts, with a particular focus on youth suicide.

In the counseling room, Dr. Grady excels in guiding individuals, families, and couples through challenges related to anxiety, depression, and relationship struggles. Dr. Grady specializes in a holistic approach that goes beyond addressing the surface symptoms of mental illness. She delves into the core issues that underlie these challenges, aiming to identify and address the root causes. This approach recognizes the interconnectedness of mental, emotional, spiritual, and physical well-being, emphasizing the importance of the mind-body connection.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Identify key epidemiological trends and risk factors for suicide using current CDC and NVDRS data.
  2. Describe the leading theoretical models of suicidality (Joiner’s Interpersonal Theory, O’Connor’s IMV Model, Klonsky’s Three-Step Theory)
  3. Tailor treatment approaches to specific populations, including men, women, youth, and older adults.
  4. Recognize the role of connection — to self, others, and future — as a unifying concept in suicide prevention and recovery.
  5. Reflect on clinician self-awareness, emotional regulation, and countertransference in working with suicidal patients.

Description: This 3-hour training provides clinicians with an in-depth, evidence-based understanding of suicide risk, assessment, and intervention across the lifespan. Drawing on current CDC and NVDRS data, leading theories (Interpersonal Theory, IMV Model, Three-Step Theory), and practical clinical tools (C-SSRS, SAFE-T, PHQ-9), participants will learn how to identify risk and protective factors, explore effective suicide assessments, and implement collaborative, person-centered interventions. The presentation integrates gender-specific and age-specific considerations, emphasizing connection — to self, others, and the future — as the cornerstone of recovery. Through lecture, case examples, and multimedia storytelling, attendees will gain skills to confidently manage suicidal presentations, strengthen therapeutic alliances, and promote long-term safety and meaning for their patients.

Target Audience: Social Workers, Counselors, and/or other Mental Health Professionals
